"The Ring" by Bobbie Pyron is an enticing novel. It is about a troubled teen girl who gets into boxing. She is the modern picture of angst. She dies her blond hair jet black and disobeys her stepmother. She faces peer pressure and has a boyfriend that only wants her for her body. To top it all off, she is always being compared to her perfect brother--who turns out to be gay, much to the chagrin of the girl's family. At the end of the day, the girl is in trouble with the law and turns her life around with boxing.

In this book, there is a clear distinction between boxing and fighting. This is very clear as to not encourage wrongful behavior from children after they read this novel. The characters are relatable and are high school age. Several economic and ethnic backgrounds are represented. There are mature themes and some swearing. Young readers will enjoy the story, but not those who are not fond of the teenage drama genre.
