Flamingnet Student Book Reviewer  JPM

Private Peaceful is about the life of Tom Peaceful before and through his drafting into World War One. With his Mother, Molly, and his brothers Charlie and Big Joe, he has many of great adventures, until the day when the army marches through the town. He is chosen to serve in the army, and he must leave the home he knows and loves.

This was a book that should not be the first war book you have read, because it has many deaths and killings. It is also a good idea to know a little bit about the history of World War One first, or it may be confusing. I liked the beginning section of the book, when he is still at home, because it is much happier and more exciting. The ending was a little bit depressing, but otherwise I think this is a very good historical fiction book and a great first person account of the war.

SECOND REVIEW

Flamingnet Student Book Reviewer  SC

Tommo lives a simple life with his mother and brothers, Charlie and Big Joe. They are share croppers that live on the Colonel's land in England. When the news of World War One starts to circulate around their town the Colonel requests that Tommo and Charlie go to fight in the war. When they arrive in France they find that many of their friends from home will be fighting along side them

This book was had a very sad ending, but even before it the whole idea of war was poorly developed. Murpurgo was already talking about Tommo and Charlie being experienced soldiers right after it seemed like they had gotten to France. The best written part of the book is when Tommo and Charlie are at home. This books story was focused too much on Tommo's life at home and not enough on the war, which was the opposite of what I thought the book was going to be, and for this reason I did not like this war story.
