In the future, Hester and Tom own an airship, the Jenny Haniver. Hester and Tom's relationship is different then others, they claim to be boyfriend and girlfriend, but they are very different. Hester has a disfigured face and a soldier's toughness, while Tom is a handsome historian who thinks everything must be fair and just. They live in a world where cities move and bigger cities eat littler cities and enslave all of their citizens. Their airship, the Jenny Haniver used to be a famous commander's in the Anti-Traction League before she died in battle. After her death a new division of the Anti- Traction League was formed, the Green Storm, which is a very extreme group. The Green Storm got in an airship chase with Tom and Hester in which they destroy all of the Green Storms airships, but the Jenny Haniver is badly damaged. They must make an emergency landing on the moving city of Anchorage. While repairs are being done Tom becomes attached with the people and the thought of living on a moving city, as he did in his childhood. He then tries to get Hester to stay on Anchorage too, but Hester has other ideas. Soon they are caught up in a plot to save Anchorage, the Jenny Haniver, and their lives.

I thought the beginning of this book was extremely confusing, because there were so many concepts that differed from what we see in our world, an example being the moving cities. For the first few chapters I had no idea of what was happening, the story just starts off with few introductions. I probably would have been less confused at the beginning if I had read the first book, Mortal Engines. I would highly recommend reading it before reading Predator's Gold. After I had finished the first few chapters the book got a lot better. Overall it was a good book that would be better if the first book were read before this one.

SECOND REVIEW

Flamingnet Student Book Reviewer  WZ

The book is set in the future, where America is a ruin and cities on wheels prowl the northern ice caps, the smaller ones look for trash as food, and the larger ones look for smaller cities as food. The protagonists, Hester and Tom, are not officially married. They are aviators of an airship. During one of their voyages they pick up Professor Nimrod Pennyroyal, a famous historian/novelist. On that same voyage, a mysterious group called Green Storm attacks the trio. Hester, Tom, and Professor Pennyroyal manage to survive, but their ship is going to crash. They land their damaged ship near the near mythical city of Anchorage, which has decided to go to what is now Canada because of Pennyroyal's book on America, which he says is re-growing with new plants and animals. They seek to find a safe haven among the people who, according to Pennyroyal's book, live there. The Margravine, or leader, of Anchorage falls in love with Tom, and to win Tom back, Hester concocts a dangerous scheme. She eventually regrets the decision, but it is now to late. It is hard to imagine that everything will turn out well.

This book was a very well written book. Every so often, you find a book with countless problems, and the possible solution to those problems always goes wrong, yet the book has a happy ending. This is definitely that sort of book. It is amazing that everything works out okay, yet it does. My summary above is only a fraction of all the twists and turns of the plot yet it is all well described and is packed into 309 pages. This book could be worthy to take a place in my favorites, and a grand total of three authors have gotten books into there. <9>Rating: 9
