Flamingnet Student Book Reviewer  SHC
Clotee is a slave on the Belmont Plantation (Virginia) in 1859. She has taught herself how to read and write which she must keep a secret. She works in the Big House as a servant to the master and his family. The book is a great account of what life was like for a slave right before the Civil War. It shows how cruel the white slave owners were. I liked the book because of how it was written, as the diary of Clotee, and because of the realistic descriptions of slavery.
